Olympic medallist PV Sindhu faced a harrowing experience at Dubai International Airport due to escalating tensions in the Gulf. Following missile strikes resulting from a U.S. and Israeli offensive on Iran, Sindhu and her coach found themselves stranded after an explosion near their location at the airport. Flight operations were disrupted, affecting Sindhu’s scheduled participation in the upcoming All England Open Badminton Championships in Birmingham.
Sindhu described the situation as tense and claustrophobic, highlighting the unsettling proximity of the explosion. Her coach, Irwansyah Adi Pratama, confirmed the incident as a narrow escape and expressed hope to leave for Birmingham in time for the championships.
Efforts by Dubai Airport staff and the Indian High Commission ensured Sindhu and her team were moved to a secure location. Meanwhile, Air India and other airlines suspended flights to and from key Gulf airports, while Dubai International Airport halted operations.
The Badminton World Federation (BWF) is monitoring developments and considering schedule adjustments to accommodate any delayed athletes. Although most Indian shuttlers have reached Birmingham, others, including Unnati Hooda, are facing travel disruptions due to flight cancellations. The Badminton Association of India is making efforts to reroute affected players through alternative locations like Singapore.
