Comedian Jim Breuer criticized American Airlines after he and his wife were unexpectedly downgraded from first class to economy shortly before their return flight from Honolulu to Florida. In a YouTube video, the former “SNL” star explained that they had splurged on first-class tickets for their round trip to visit their daughter’s internship in Hawaii. Although their flight to Honolulu was smooth, their return journey became problematic after a brief layover in Arizona.

Breuer recounted seeing airline pilots, who were not scheduled to operate the flight, arrive at the gate just before they were informed of the downgrade. The airline offered them a $500 voucher and a $400 refund, but Breuer felt cheated, accusing American Airlines of “stealing” his seats and likening the experience to being robbed. He expressed frustration over the lack of meaningful resolution from the airline’s customer service despite repeated attempts to address his grievances.

Breuer humorously suggested that two first-class one-way tickets could make amends. His experience resonated with many followers who shared similar sentiments about the airline’s customer service. Critics noted the airline’s policy of giving deadheading pilots priority for first-class upgrades, often above loyal customers.
